See No Evil

In this third title in the Father Gabriel Mystery series, the detective priest is less than pleased to find himself the reluctant guest at a wealthy local family's Christmas party. Only the excellent – and probably black market – food softens the horror of meeting the odious Victor Gladstone, a veteran reporter, an ardent anti-clerical and the only witness to a wartime massacre no one wishes to hear about.  When Victor is found dead on the Martin estate the next morning, the apparent victim of an unfortunate accident, Gabriel is drawn into the mystery of who among the family's chattering guests could have wanted the old man dead.

Gabriel quickly realizes that Victor Gladstone, like any good reporter, had a nose for rotten behavior, but as Gabriel's investigation moves towards its tragic conclusion, he faces the not one but two serious questions: Who is guilty of Gladstone's murder? and Is anyone truly innocent?

This mystery focuses on the issue of indirect involvement in evil, particularly buying and selling property stolen from victims of the Nazis and witnessing Nazi crimes.

Seeing Through the Eye

"Malcolm Muggeridge was one of Great Britain's mostwell-known journalists and television personalities, having interviewed practically every major public figure of his time. He shocked the world with his conversion to Christianity later in life. ""St. Mugg"", as he was affectionately known, was clear in his new-found faith: ""It is the truth that has died, not God,"" and ""Jesus was God or he was nothing."" These wonderful selections of Muggeridge's writings and speeches cover a wide variety of spiritualthemes, revealing his profound faith, great wit, and lively writing style. Topics include ""Jesus: The Man Who Lives"", ""Is There a God?"", ""The Prospect of Death"", ""Do We NeedReligion?"", ""Peace and Power"", and many more.

""The counter-countercultural declaration of Mr. Muggeridge'sconversion was especially eye-catching given the great legions traveling in the opposite direction. His largerpublic knew him through his work as a television host and critic. But all of literate England, and much of America, knew him as a learned and incisive journalist who had written Winter in Moscow, a searing exposé of Communism. His intellect and historical savoir-faire gave hiscriticisms a very long reach. In America he made regular appearances as book editor of Esquire magazine. NoEnglishman has a more mordant, more attractive wit.""

All the Light We Cannot See

All the Light We Cannot See

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist, the beloved instant New York Times bestseller and New York Times Book Review Top 10 Book about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris, and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the Resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge.

Doerr’s “stunning sense of physical detail and gorgeous metaphors” (
San Francisco Chronicle) are dazzling. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, he illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Ten years in the writing, All the Light We Cannot See is a magnificent, deeply moving novel from a writer “whose sentences never fail to thrill” (Los Angeles Times).

Brother Rafael and the Rainy Day Devils
Brother Rafael and the Rainy Day Devils

Brother Rafael heard a voice speak to his heart. It was not like the cackling of the red devils—causing confusion, sadness, and regret. This voice was gentle, curious, eager for a conversation.
"What are you doing?" asked the voice.
"What do you mean, what am I doing?" asked Brother Rafael—inwardly, of course, so as not to disturb his brothers. "Lord, what a question! I'm peeling turnips."
"But why are you peeling turnips?"

It's cold and rainy outside, and inside the monastery kitchen. Brother Rafael is having a bad day. Pestered by gloomy thoughts, he is becoming discouraged. What does he do to let in the light and the warmth he needs? He turns to Jesus. This uplifting and lavishly illustrated story will inspire children to call on God for strength in the daily struggle against temptation.
