Milton Lomask contributes his second volume to the Vision Books series of saints for youth 9 - 15 years old in this story of the greatly beloved Cure of Ars. Jean-Marie Vianney, a farm boy born during the French Revolution, longed to become a priest. But he could not learn Latin, and it seemed as if the humble, lovable, slow-thinking Jean-Marie would never be ordained. He did at last become a priest, and such a holy one that St. Jean-Marie Vianney is invoked as the patron saint and model of parish priests everywhere. To many he is known, not by name, but simply as "the Cure of Ars, " the parish priest who devoted his life to the little village of Ars and so successfully led his people to sanctity that he became a prime target of the devil.

John Mary Vianney: The Holy Cure of Ars
John Mary Vianney: The Holy Cure of Ars

Father John Vianney, the beloved Cure of Ars, is the patron saint of parish priests for good reason. His simple way of life, his compassion for the poor, his long hours in the confessional, and his heartfelt celebration of the Mass endeared him to his parishioners, as well as to the countless Frenchmen who traveled many miles to receive the sacraments from this holy man.

In this tenderly and colorfully illustrated story, children will learn how John Vianney heard his calling to the priesthood when as a young boy during the French Revolution he attended underground Masses with his devout family. They will also learn how he struggled in school, yet persevered in his studies until his dream to be a priest was realized.

When Father Vianney was assigned to the parish in Ars, he found that the faith and religious practice of the local people had been weakened by the Revolution and the rise of Napoleon. He ate and slept very little as he poured himself out for the salvation of souls. His reputation spread far and wide, and in the last years of his life, he spent up to seventeen hours a day hearing the confessions of people from all over France.

With his kindness, wisdom and occasional miracle, Father Vianney won over many hearts, and he was mourned by thousands when he died in Ars at the age of 73.

“People would line up all the way down the street until late at night to make their confession to him. In the midst of the crowd, the Curé of Ars could spot those who needed him most…
‘You, madam, you’re in a hurry’, he said. ‘Come quickly to make your confession.’
The woman was astonished. How could this priest whom she had never seen before know that she had sixteen children waiting for her at home?
God had given Father Vianney the gift of seeing into people’s hearts. Miracles even happened in his presence.”

Brother Rafael and the Rainy Day Devils
Brother Rafael and the Rainy Day Devils

Brother Rafael heard a voice speak to his heart. It was not like the cackling of the red devils—causing confusion, sadness, and regret. This voice was gentle, curious, eager for a conversation.
"What are you doing?" asked the voice.
"What do you mean, what am I doing?" asked Brother Rafael—inwardly, of course, so as not to disturb his brothers. "Lord, what a question! I'm peeling turnips."
"But why are you peeling turnips?"

It's cold and rainy outside, and inside the monastery kitchen. Brother Rafael is having a bad day. Pestered by gloomy thoughts, he is becoming discouraged. What does he do to let in the light and the warmth he needs? He turns to Jesus. This uplifting and lavishly illustrated story will inspire children to call on God for strength in the daily struggle against temptation.
